Life of a TamBrahm

All About Being a Tamil Brahmin

Being my first time, I thought i will write something about myself and some interesting things that has happened to me in this blog. I think everybody love to have a sneak peek into others life and so do I :)  As recently I was discussing this with a good friend of mine that its nice to watch others life from your balcony .

This was written with pure intention of letting know people of how fun it is to be an Brahmin. And no offence meant.. nor any religious Pun
So today, I thought I will pen down some factors which are typical of a Tamil Brahmin family...

To begin with I take absolute pleasure for being born into an Brahmin family. As a kid,the funniest thing was to run away from my granny who tries to beat me but who screws anyone in my family who comes near me and of all what I loved the most was the marriage ceremonies of my cousins and aunts which used to be so very colourful.. Two long days and loads of fun, where mammi’s sing songs like ‘ seethaa kalyana’ and of course I get to see other Brahmin girls :)

I used to envy the bride and groom who used to have fun on the swing( uunjal) and also for playing with garlands .  But  only now doI know that its not fun at all as you have to sit hours together before the  holy fire or hoomakundam  … now that iam married and actually slept half way through the marriage, its fun to be on the other side

Some things which are typical of a  tamil brahmin house hold ....

Steel glass in which u get steaming decoction coffee by grandmother
Hindu news paper
Thulasi Tree( where u grow a thulsi plant and where u can find a small hut like structure,   where u light the  lamp)
Kolam or design in front of the house in arisi mavu (Rice Paste)
A pooja room which we call as swami room.A Murugar or Ganapathy padam( photo) which will be hung in the front room.
With my name being "Ganesh Kumar" but the who brahmin fraternity calls me "Ganechu" which i have no idea of why
.Dosa and Idly are our 'national food'. We can eat dosa or idly 24 *7  and still eat more without hesitation.

Curd which is also called the Brahmins Beer (Name created by Me) us very much mandatory as we have curd along wit dosa, chapathi, idli and many other deadly combinations and yehhh some uurkai( pickle) how can I forget that. . And we can have a sumptuous meal by just having  curd rice and pickle.I Loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Curd

A singer, dancer  or some genius’ in the art field.

My house is no exception from all these. All my friends who had visited my house may know this better than me.

And when ever there is a get together in the family you get stuck with some mama, mami  or oorupadi of your relatives who will ask the most dangerous question… “ yenne therinjutho ono unaku? Nee Natarajanoda Paiyan thane?   ( do u recognize me? you are  Natarajan’s son right?)and thats one big embarrassing  moment where you give the most stupid smile of yours.. and you will be uttering like a reporter on tv.. mhmm a.. aaahhh…. Athuvandhuuu….  Until your mom or dad comes to your rescue.

Thats what happens among relatives..

But among friends.. you face the most lovely as well as irritating moments….

When you just finish saying to them that you are an Brahmin they say “ thieru soora(Curd Rice)

Grr….. that moment u feel like smashing them.. and also when u say you are a veggie ,next second someone comes the  explanation that they have a friend whose an Brahmin who secretly eats meat but of course with due respects to culture as he removes his punool( the sacred thread)  or some people dont which is really offensive and then you feel like shouting at them  decently like that there are people like us who still respect and value our culture or indecently like shut up you ass :)

Some have even gone to the extent of asking me whether I have a punool (Sacred Tread around the shoulder). and the lovely moments are when  they eagerly ask whether yu really break the papads on your partner’s head on your marriage day or whether the bride sits on her father’s lap at the time of marriage  or  when they ask us to invite them for ur marriage....and also when they ask recipes of vathakozhambu, maavadu.. etc.

And last but not the least  about being a Tamil Brahmin..

you speak the strangest language.. which is a funny ‘ naan aathuku poren’  ( I am gong home “Aathuku” in normal tamil means Lake but in Brahmin language it is home) and many more.  But I really am proud to be one.
